BETTS, Gregory (with Matt Donovan and Hallie Siegel): Haikube
The Haikube is a free-moving three-dimensional cube handmade from ebony. Each three-inch face is comprised of nine unit cubes. On the exterior face of each unit cube is a word. On each of the six faces of the cube, the nine unit cubes form a nine-word poem modelled after the syllabic structure of the traditional Japanese haiku. Beyond the horizontal symmetry of the haiku, the constraint of the Haikube follows a further vertical symmetry. Each column and row of the unit cubes can rotate around the central point. It is an edition of two. The poems collected in this book were all generated by the random rotation of the Haikube. By aleatory manipulation, the Haikube can thus randomly create haikus ñ poems by chance. The poems that begin each chapter in this selection were the original orientation of the nine unit cubes. We prefer to think of these particular patterns as the originary faces rather than the solution. As this collection attests there are multiple solutions to the cube ñ each a moment of pause in the Haikubeís perpetual motion. The Haikube is one of Matt Donovan and Hallie Siegalís History Machines; an ongoing dialogue about art and communication. They have been creating collaborative work for this series since 2002. This particular machine utilizes Gregory Bettsí constraint-based experimental writing. He is the author of If Language, a book of interconnected paragraph-length anagrams published last year by BookThug.AVAILABLEISBN 0-9739742-4-9Poetry/Sculpture5.5x5.5; 44 PagesStapled and bound into wrappersSecond Printing

BETTS, Gregory: If Language
Most anagrammaticians satisfy their urge with the rearranged name of a celebrity (Marshall McLuhan = Malls launch harm) or perhaps, if more adventurous, a familiar aphorism (The Medium is the Message = The Media is the Museís Gem). The true devotees of the clan turn to games like Scrabble and Humbug. Gregory Bettsí If Language takes this one-time parlour game to its evolutionary extreme ñ constructing 56 paragraph-long perfect anagrams of an original seed-text. Each poem is exactly 525 letters; the same letters that echo throughout the book is radically different forms. These poems test the endless possibilities of the constraint. They tell the mystical history of anagrams ñ from its use by early scientists to escape Christian zealots to Rosicrucian symbology to Greek mythology to Kabbalism. They explore how individualities happen in words and limited vocabularies. If Language asks the question: what are the limits of individuality within a closed system? Betts uses his own experiences, relationships and uncertainties to explore this question ñ with humour, with intellect, and with a manic obsession capable of turning a simple game into this wildly original exploration. If Language was a short-listed finalist for Rhode Islandís Fitzpatrick OíDinn Award for constraint based writing in 2004.ëIf language can be nihilistic in its wit, if language can be simplistic in its fun ñ then this book truly uncovers all the ëabracadabrasí hidden deep a million ages ago within even the most unmagical of all grammatical limitations.í --Christain BˆkISBN 9780973818164107pp; 8.75x5.25 inches; paperback; $20.00Second Printing
