About O Spam, Poams, and the Daily Treated Spam that inspired it

In 2003, Rob Read started collecting, modifying, and sending back out his junk e-mail - or ‘spam’ - after editing it into thought-provoking poetry. Initially sent only to a small number of friends, the list of those receiving the so-called Daily Treated Spam soon ballooned as the word spread.

Rob’s primary technique when creating each day’s ‘poam’ (a combination of the words ‘poem’ and ‘spam’) is to take the seemingly random words that spammers use to try and evade spam filter software, and erase portions of these passages until he is satisfied with the resulting poem.

The resulting poems retain a certain familiarity to anyone that’s ever read a spam e-mail all the way through, and yet also have the added touch of being meaningful in unpredictable ways.

Rob Read acts as catalyst changing the useless debris of spam into meaningful literature.
