blewointmentpress (affectionately named after a cure for body lice) was started by poet/artist/visionary bill bissett in the early sixties as blewointment magazine. He soon turned it into a rag-tag independent press, virtually running the entire operation himself, publishing books by himself and his friends and often doing all the printing and binding of the books himself. Eventually he managed to receive Canada Council funding until he was charged with being a pornographer and had it revoked. The books, at least early on, were usually mimeo printed and bound by hand, and sometimes they had a distinctly unprofessional look about them. As time went on, the books took on a more professionaly appearance, but there was no way in hell that one couldn't tell they were looking at a blewointmentpress title at first glance. bissett ran the press until the mid 80s when he sold it to David Lee & Maureen Cochrane who eventually changed the name to Nightwood Editions, which still exists today. Nightwood has recetly started up an imprint called blewointment to remind us of their lineage.
